The MaineAEYC is pleased to acknowledge the efforts of Birchwood Day Nursery School in Windham, ME for their commitment to serve their community with fundraising efforts to support the RSU #14 Backpack Program. The RSU #14 Backpack Program relies on donations to provide food for children in need on the weekends and school vacations when school nutrition programs are unavailable to them.
Birchwood is in its 2nd year of fundraising for the Backpack Program. The school wide fundraiser included a Dance-A-Thon in which the 3 year old programs gathered to dance to favorite songs and cool down with a healthy snack and water as part of a lesson in nutrition. The 4 year old programs participated in a “Birchwood Marathon” that encouraged children to run 5 laps along a marked running course while being cheered on by family members, peers, and staff. The students trained for their run for two weeks prior practicing good sportsmanship and perseverance. This year’s race was also attended by coordinators of the RSU #14 Backpack Program, the Windham Primary School Principal, and Crusher, the Portland Red Claws Mascot. The Birchwood Marathon preceded this year’s Boston Marathon which was included in the children’s curriculum as they learned about various types of runners in Boston and took away the positive message about ‘not giving up’. The children also received a visit from the Backpack Program coordinator prior to the race that showed visuals of the nutritional items the children receive from the program.
Birchwood was ecstatic to present the final fundraiser check to the RSU #14 Backpack Program in the amount of $3,200.00. This will help feed roughly 15 children in the upcoming school year.
We would also like to acknowledge Birchwood’s overall commitment to high quality as they became reaccredited by NAEYC in the fall of 2014 and maintain a Level 4 on Maine’s Quality Rating Scale.
Thank you, Birchwood for your commitment to your community and quality experiences in early childhood!
